FSA issues response to DEFRA consultation paper on Cremation Guidance

Following the recent consultation paper issued by DEFRA on crematorium Guidance PGN (5/12), the Funeral Suppliers’ Association incl Funeral Furnishing Manufacturers’ Association have issued their response.

‘Due to the complexity of reliably identifying the carbon footprint (Global Warming Potential) of a coffin made up from so many different elements and following discussions with other trade organisations, the proposal for funeral directors to advise crematorium operators on the carbon content of every individual coffin is viewed as impractical by manufacturers, funeral directors and crematorium managers due to the additional bureaucracy, costs and workload it will generate.’

As an alternative it has been suggested that the CO2 value for a furnished coffin is used to estimate the amount of carbon produced by a cremation.
